Audio Post

An audio post is an ordinary post with an Audio card in it and the internal tag #audio. The tag puts the post in the Listen section of the front page and on the podcast page, and it gives the post a sticky player that stays on screen while the reader scrolls.

Use it for podcast episodes, interviews or a recorded version of an article, with show notes or a transcript underneath.

Setup Instructions#

  1. Open the post you want to turn into an audio post
  2. Add an Audio card where you want the player, and upload the audio file into it
  3. Optionally, give the card a title and a thumbnail in the card's settings
  4. Open Post settings → Tags and add the internal tag #audio
  5. Click Publish or Update

Use an internal tag that starts with # so it stays hidden from your public site.

The audio card can sit anywhere in the post. Break leaves it where you put it and uses the first audio card it finds for the sticky player.

The Listen Section#

The Listen section of the front page shows your six newest posts tagged #audio:

  • the newest one as a large card with its picture, a play mark, the episode number, the date, the reading time, the title and a short excerpt
  • the next five as a list of episodes, each with a thumbnail, the reading time, the title, the episode number and the date

Episodes are numbered by their place in the list, newest first. The head of the section links to your RSS feed. Each card opens the post, where the player is. The section is left out of the front page while no post carries the tag. See Watch, Listen, Picture.

The Podcast Page#

A page with the slug podcast lists up to 50 posts tagged #audio in the same layout, under the heading Episodes.

  1. Go to Pages and click New page
  2. Enter a title, for example the name of your show
  3. Open Page settings and change Page URL to podcast
  4. Optionally, write a short description in the Excerpt field
  5. Click Publish

The page body is not shown. The title and the excerpt open the page when Show title and feature image is on for the page. See Live, Video and Podcast.

The Sticky Player#

The sticky player appears once the reader has pressed play and the audio card has scrolled out of view. When the card comes back into view, the player goes away and the audio keeps playing.

PartWhat it does
ArtworkThe thumbnail of the audio card, or the post's feature image
TitleThe title of the audio card. Click it to scroll back to the card
Play / pauseControls the same audio as the card. The card's own buttons stay in step
ProgressA line that fills as the episode plays
ClosePauses the audio and hides the player. Escape does the same

Pausing keeps the player on screen, so the reader can start again from it. When the episode ends, the player goes away.

Now Playing#

While the audio plays, the top bar shows the title of the episode with a close button, next to the clock. A click on the title scrolls back to the card, and the close button pauses the audio and hides the player. On phones and narrow windows this part of the top bar is hidden. See Top Bar.

Audio Badge on Cards#

The picture cards of a post tagged #audio carry an Audio badge, on the front page, in the archives and in the mega menus. There is no second tag to add.

Notes#

  • The title shown in the sticky player and in the top bar is the title you give the audio card, not the post title. Ghost fills it with the file name when you upload, so rename it in the card.
  • If a post carries both #audio and #video, the sticky player follows the audio card.
  • Removing #audio takes the post out of the Listen section and the podcast page, and the audio card plays inline without the sticky player.
  • Everything around the audio card is a normal post body, so show notes, a transcript and a table of contents all work as usual.
  • The post's Listen button, which reads the text aloud, is a separate feature. See Post Features.
