Table of Contents
Break does not put a table of contents above the post. It shows it in the bottom bar instead, where it stays in view while the reader moves through the text.
What Readers See#
In the middle of the bottom bar, on a post with headings:
- the heading of the part being read, changing as the reader moves on
- its place among the headings, for example
03 / 07 - a list of every heading, which opens when the pointer rests on the heading in the bar
A click on a heading in the list jumps to that part of the post.
The list holds the H2 headings of the post. H3 and smaller headings are left out, so a long post keeps a short list. Structure your post with H2 for its main parts.
The bottom bar is on every page. See Reading Mode for its other parts.
When It Appears#
| Content | Default | With toc in Disabled features |
|---|---|---|
| Posts | On every post with headings | Only on posts tagged #toc |
| Pages | Only on pages tagged #toc | Only on pages tagged #toc |
A post or page without headings shows nothing in the middle of the bar, however it is tagged.
Switching it off site-wide#
- Go to ⛭ Settings → Design
- Click Customize
- Open the Theme tab
- Add
tocto Disabled features, separated from the other values by a comma - Click Save
Turning it on for one post or page#
- Open the post or page
- Click Post settings or Page settings
- In the Tags field add
#toc - Click Update
The # makes it an internal tag, so readers never see it.
Notes#
- On phones and narrow windows the bottom bar has no room for the headings, so the table of contents is not shown there. The section label and the progress stay.
- The list is built from the headings in your content when the page loads. Rename a heading in the editor and the list follows after you update the post.
