Numbers and Agenda
Two front page sections are written as pages in the Ghost editor. Editors update them like any other page, and the front page follows.
| Section | Page slug | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| By the numbers | numbers | A row of large figures, each with a short caption |
| The week ahead | agenda | A dated list of upcoming events |
Each section appears once its page is published. Unpublish the page or change its slug to hide the section.
By the Numbers#
A filled card with a headline, a line under it and a row of large figures. Each figure has a caption under it.
| Page field | Where it appears |
|---|---|
| Title | The large headline of the card |
| Excerpt | The line under the headline |
| Lists | The figures and their captions |
| Everything else in the body | Only on the page itself, not on the front page |
The section heading always reads By the numbers. Its link, Sources, opens the page, so the paragraphs after the list are a good place for your sources and notes.
Setup#
- Go to Pages and click New page
- Enter the headline as the title, for example
The week in freight - Open Page settings and change Page URL to numbers
- Enter the line under the headline in the Excerpt field, for example
Four figures our desks kept coming back to - Write the figures as a bulleted list, as shown in the next part
- Optionally, add a heading such as
Sourcesunder the list and your sources as paragraphs - Click Publish
Writing the list#
Every list item starts with the figure in bold, followed by the caption in normal text.
- On an empty line in the page body, type
-and a space to start a bulleted list - Press Cmd+B on a Mac or Ctrl+B on Windows, type the figure, and press the same keys again to turn bold off
- Type a space and the caption
- Press Enter for the next item
The finished list reads like this, with the bold part in **:
- **6** weeks in a row of falling container spot rates
- **40** ships at anchor off the Elbe at the height of the fog
- **12,000 t** of cargo on the first crewless feeder crossing
- **5%** of tankers on our map silent for more than twelve hours
On the front page, 6, 40, 12,000 t and 5% are set large, and the rest of each line is the caption under its figure.
The figures stand in two columns, or one on a narrow screen, so four figures make two even rows. Keep each figure short. It is set large on one line and does not wrap.
The Week Ahead#
A dated list of what is coming up. The section heading is the page's title, so a page titled The week ahead gives a section of that name. Its link, Full agenda, opens the page.
The whole page body is shown in the section, which scrolls when the list is long. Headings become the names of days, and each list item shows its bold date in a narrow column with the event beside it. On a wide screen the days run in two columns.
Setup#
- Go to Pages and click New page
- Enter the section heading as the title, for example
The week ahead - Open Page settings and change Page URL to agenda
- Write the agenda in the body: a heading for each day, then a bulleted list whose items start with a bold date
- Click Publish
Write the list items the same way as the figures above: the date in bold, then the event in normal text. The finished body reads like this:
## Monday
- **Oct 5** Freight index, weekly release at 10:00 London time
- **Oct 5** The ports and terminals conference opens in Antwerp
## Tuesday
- **Oct 6** The port authority publishes its monthly throughput report
To add a day heading in the editor, type ## and a space on an empty line, then the day's name.
Notes#
- The theme looks for the page by its slug, not its title. The Page URL must be exactly
numbersoragenda. - Both pages are published pages, so they also open at
/numbers/and/agenda/. Leave them out of your navigation if you only want them on the front page. - Update the agenda every week. The theme does not hide dates that have passed.
