Desks
A desk is a front page section for one tag. Each desk is headed by the tag's name and shows that tag's newest posts. You choose the tags with the Desks filter setting, and Break gives each one its own section after Today.
Customization Steps#
- Navigate to ⛭ Settings → Design
- Click Customize
- Click Theme
- Scroll to the Homepage section
- Edit Desks filter
- Click Save
The default value is popular:4, which gives a desk to each of the four tags with the most posts.
Filter Options#
| Value | Result |
|---|---|
popular:4 | The four tags with the most posts, the biggest first |
a-z:4 | The first four tags in alphabetical order |
z-a:4 | The first four tags in reverse alphabetical order |
recent:4 | The four most recently created tags, the newest first |
business, tech | Exactly the tags with these slugs |
| empty | No desks at all |
Change the number to get more or fewer desks. Without a number, as in popular, every public tag gets a desk, up to 100.
Write the filter without spaces around the colon: popular:4 works,
popular : 4 does not. To list tags by name, use their slugs, which you can
find in ⛭ Settings → Tags.
A tag with no published posts does not get a section. Tags whose slug starts with issue- are always left out, because they are editions, not desks. See Issues.
What a Desk Shows#
Each desk is headed by the tag's name. The head also shows how many stories the tag has, for example 24 stories, and that count links to the tag's archive page.
The first six desks take turns between three looks:
| Look | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Lead | The newest post as a large card with its picture and excerpt, and the next three as rows beside it |
| Grid | The newest post on a filled card with its picture, excerpt and author, and the next four as picture cards |
| Ledger | Four posts as timed rows without pictures: the time and date, the title, a line of excerpt, the reading time |
The looks follow the order of the desks:
| Desk | Look |
|---|---|
| 1st and 4th | Lead |
| 2nd and 5th | Grid |
| 3rd and 6th | Ledger |
| 7th and later | Lead |
The look depends only on the tag's position in the list the filter returns, not on the tag itself.
Notes#
- In the Lead look, posts do not show their tag, since the desk heading already names it.
- The same post can appear in several desks if it carries several of the desk tags.
- To rename a desk, rename the tag in ⛭ Settings → Tags. The desk heading follows the tag's name.
