The Wire and Today

The Wire and Today follow the featured post and the live column. Both are built from your latest posts, so there is nothing to set up. Publish and they fill themselves.

The Wire#

The wire is a timed list of your 12 newest posts. Each row shows a small thumbnail with the publish time under it, the title and a one-line excerpt. On a desktop the list scrolls inside its own section.

Grouped by day#

The posts are grouped by the day they were published. Each day starts with a date row, such as 1 Oct 2026. The rows for the current day and the day before also say Today and Yesterday. Days are counted in the site's timezone, set in ⛭ Settings → General, so every reader sees the same days as your newsroom.

New since the last visit#

Break remembers when a reader last visited the site. On the next visit, every story published since then gets a small mark before its title, and the head of the wire shows how many there are, for example 3 new. A visit ends when the reader closes the browser tab or window, so the marks stay in place while they keep reading.

The record is kept in the reader's own browser. On a first visit there is nothing to compare with, so no story is marked.

The head of the wire links to your site's RSS feed at /rss/. The link opens in a new tab.

Auto-refresh#

While a reader keeps the front page open, the wire checks the RSS feed every 60 seconds. When you publish a new post, the list updates in place without reloading the page. The check only runs while the tab is in front.

To turn this off, add auto-refresh to Disabled features. It also stops the live page from refreshing. See Features.

Today#

Today shows your six newest posts:

  • the newest one as a large card: picture, tag, title, excerpt, author, reading time and date
  • the next five as rows beside it: tag, title, a one-line excerpt and a thumbnail with the reading time

The head links to /blog/ with the label All. That page needs the routes.yaml file that ships with the theme. See Getting Started.

Notes#

  • The wire leaves out posts tagged #newsletter, which live on /newsletters/. This depends on the uploaded routes.yaml.
  • The wire, Today and the live column all draw on your newest posts, so the same post can appear in more than one of them.
  • To rename The wire or Today, see Section Headings.
