Front Page Overview

The Break front page is a row of sections. Each section is filled by content you already publish: featured posts, tags, pages and authors. There is nothing to switch on. A section appears as soon as it has something to show.

How the Page Moves#

On a desktop screen the sections stand side by side and the page scrolls sideways. The mouse wheel, a trackpad swipe and the arrow keys all move it left and right. Each section heading runs down the left edge of its section as a vertical strip.

The page scrolls sideways when all of these are true:

  • the window is at least 992 pixels wide
  • the window is wider than it is tall
  • the window is at least 600 pixels tall
  • the reader has not chosen Scroll in the settings panel

Everywhere else the sections stack and the page scrolls down, as on any other site. This includes phones, tablets held upright and the Scroll reading mode. See Reading Mode for how readers switch between the two and how to turn the sideways layout off for the whole site.

Section Order#

The front page shows its sections in this order:

  1. Featured
  2. Live updates
  3. The wire
  4. Today
  5. One section per desk
  6. Opinion
  7. Weekend feature
  8. Most read
  9. Editor's picks
  10. Long reads
  11. Watch
  12. Listen
  13. The picture
  14. Markets
  15. By the numbers
  16. The week ahead
  17. From the archive
  18. Newsroom
  19. Reading list
  20. What do we cover?

Every page of the site then closes with three more sections: Recommendations, Subscribe and the footer.

On the sideways layout, Live updates stands next to the featured post as a narrow column. When the sections stack, it follows the featured post.

Sections Without Content#

A section with nothing to show is not rendered at all. If no post is tagged #video, there is no Watch section, and Listen moves up to take its place.

Section headings are numbered. The featured post counts as 01, so The wire is 02, Today is 03, and so on. A section that is not rendered is skipped by the numbering, so the numbers never have gaps. Live updates, Subscribe and the footer carry no number.

The Bottom Bar#

A bar along the bottom of the screen tracks where the reader is on the page:

  • Previous and Next buttons jump one section back or forward. The j and k keys do the same.
  • A progress track and a percentage show how far along the page the reader is.
  • At the right end, the name of the current section and a counter such as 05 / 24.

The counter counts every section that is on the page, including Live updates, Subscribe and the footer. Sections that are not rendered are not counted.

The Closing Sections#

These three sections close every page of the site, not only the front page:

  • Recommendations shows up to six of the sites you recommend in Ghost, with a link to the /recommendations/ page. It appears only while recommendations are turned on in Ghost. See Recommendations.
  • Subscribe shows a signup form. It appears when membership is turned on in Ghost and the reader is not signed in. See Membership.
  • The footer shows your site description and title, the navigation links, social links, the language switcher and the copyright line. See Copyright and Social Links.

Notes#

  • The order of the sections is fixed in the theme files. There is no setting to reorder or hide a section. To hide one, leave it without content.
  • To rename a section heading, see Section Headings.
  • Older posts are on /page/2/ and further pages, which show a grid of posts instead of the sections.
