Account and Sign-in

Ghost Portal handles signing up, signing in and account settings in a popup. Break adds three pages that do the same work as full pages, so you can link them from the menu or from an email. Each one is an ordinary Ghost page with a fixed URL.

Page URLWhat it shows
/account/The member's plan and account links, or a sign-in prompt for visitors
/signin/A sign-in card, or a confirmation for a reader who is already signed in
/subscribe/A heading with the subscribe form

Setup Instructions#

Create a page for each one you want to use:

  1. Go to Pages → New page
  2. Enter a page title, for example Your account, Sign in or Subscribe
  3. Open Page settings and change Page URL to account, signin or subscribe
  4. Optionally add a line in the Excerpt field
  5. Click Publish

Then add the pages you want readers to find to ⛭ Settings → Navigation.

The title and excerpt are part of each page's card, so they are shown whatever Show title and feature image is set to. Anything written in the page body appears below the card, for example a privacy note or a short FAQ. The subscribe section that closes every other page of the site is left off these three pages.

The pages need members turned on in ⛭ Settings → Membership. With members off, the buttons and the form do not appear and the pages show only their text.

The Account Page#

For a signed-in member, the card shows:

  • the member's avatar, or a mail icon when there is none
  • the member's name, or the page title when the name is empty
  • the email address
  • Paid member or Free member
  • for each subscription, the Plan with its price per month or year, and the date it Renews, or Access until when it is cancelled
  • Member since with the sign-up date

Under the details, a paid member gets a Manage subscription button. A free member gets Upgrade when the site has paid tiers, and Manage account. Two links at the foot open Edit profile and Sign out in Portal.

A visitor who is not signed in sees a lock icon, the page title, the excerpt and a Sign in button. Without an excerpt, the line reads Sign in to see your membership, billing and email preferences.

The Sign-in Page#

A visitor sees the page title, the excerpt and a Sign in button that opens Portal. Without an excerpt, the line reads Enter the email you subscribed with and get a link to sign in. No password to remember. When anyone can sign up to the site, a No account yet? Create one line opens the signup form.

A reader who is already signed in sees You are signed in with their email address, a Your account button that leads to /account/, and Keep reading, which goes back to the front page. Create the account page as well, otherwise that button leads to a 404.

The Subscribe Page#

The page shows its title in large type, the excerpt under it, and the email field with the subscribe button. Readers enter their address and Ghost sends them a link to confirm.

Members who are already signed in see the title and excerpt without the form, so write the excerpt so that it reads well on its own.

Notes#

  • The Subscribe button in the top bar opens Portal, not these pages. Members see an Account button there, which also opens Portal.
  • A navigation row whose label starts with @ and whose URL is /subscribe/ opens the subscribe block in a dropdown of the menu. See Membership.
  • For the pricing page with your tiers, see Membership.
