Live, Video and Podcast
Break has a page each for breaking news, video and podcast episodes. Each one is an ordinary Ghost page with a fixed URL, and its list fills itself from an internal tag.
| Page URL | Lists the posts tagged | How they are shown |
|---|---|---|
/live/ | #breaking | A timed list that updates itself, newest first |
/video/ | #video | A grid of video cards |
/podcast/ | #audio | The newest episode as a cover, the rest as a list |
Setup Instructions#
Create one page for each format you publish:
- Go to Pages → New page
- Enter a page title, for example
Live - Open Page settings and change Page URL to live, video or podcast
- Optionally add a short intro in the Excerpt field
- Click Publish
Then add the page to ⛭ Settings → Navigation so readers can find it.
The page title and excerpt are only displayed when Show title and feature image is enabled in Page settings. The feature image itself is not shown on these pages, and anything you write in the page body is not shown either. The list below the title is the whole page.
The posts are tagged in the editor, in Post settings → Tags. Internal tags start with #, so they stay hidden from readers. See Internal Tags for the full list.
The Live Page#
The page with the URL live lists up to 30 posts tagged #breaking, newest first, under a Live updates heading. Each entry shows:
- the time and the date it was published
- up to two of its public tags
- the title, linked to the post
- up to 30 words from the Excerpt field, or from the start of the post when that field is empty
While the page is open and visible in the browser, it checks the site's RSS feed every 60 seconds. When something new has been published, the list updates without a reload. The foot of the list reads Auto-refresh 60s and links to the RSS feed.
To stop the checks, add auto-refresh to Disabled features. The same keyword also stops the wire on the front page from updating itself. See Features.
The same #breaking posts fill the live column on the front page and the flash in the top bar. See Live Updates.
The Video Page#
The page with the URL video shows up to 24 posts tagged #video as a grid under a Latest video heading, newest first. Each card shows the feature image with a Video badge, the post's first public tag, the reading time, the date, a bookmark button and the title.
Only the newest 24 videos are listed, and there is no Load More button. Older videos stay reachable through their tags and the search.
A card opens the post, where the first video in the content moves into the head of the post. See Video Post. The newest four videos also appear in the Watch section of the front page. See Watch, Listen, Picture.
The Podcast Page#
The page with the URL podcast shows up to 50 posts tagged #audio under an Episodes heading:
- the newest episode as a large card with its feature image, a Latest badge, a play mark, a line from the post and a Play label
- every other episode as a row with a thumbnail, the length, the title, the episode number and the date
The heading links to the site's RSS feed.
The episode number on each card is its place in the list, counted from the newest, so the newest episode is always Episode 1. The length shown with an episode is the post's reading time, not the duration of the audio file.
A card opens the post. Once the reader starts the audio card there, a player stays on screen while they scroll on through the post. See Audio Post. The newest six episodes also appear in the Listen section of the front page.
The Markets Page#
A page with the URL markets shows the markets tape and the posts tagged markets. See Markets.
Notes#
- The page URL has to match exactly. A page with the URL
videosorlive-newsis shown as an ordinary page without the list. - A list with no posts renders nothing, so a page created before its first tagged post shows only its title.
- A post can carry several of these tags. A video report on breaking news can be tagged both
#breakingand#videoand appear on both pages.
