Features

Break arrives with its optional features on. One field, Disabled features, lists the ones you want off. Every keyword you list is turned off for the whole site, and anything you leave out stays on.

Clearing the field gives you the full theme, not a stripped one.

Setup Instructions#

  1. Go to ⛭ Settings → Design
  2. Click Customize
  3. Open the Theme tab
  4. Find the Disabled features field
  5. Add or remove keywords, separated by commas
  6. Click Save

Default Value#

A fresh install starts with this value:

header-ad, in-article-ad, single-author
  • header-ad and in-article-ad keep both AdSense slots off. They need an AdSense account anyway. See Ads.
  • single-author is the odd one out. While it is listed, author names are shown. See the table below.

Available Features#

Each keyword below turns a feature off when you list it.

KeywordWhat you switch off by listing it
reading-columnsThe sideways layout. Every page stacks its sections, and the settings panel loses its Reading mode row. See Reading Mode
toggle-dark-modeThe light and dark choice in the settings panel. The site then follows the Dark mode setting only. See Dark Mode
breakingThe breaking flash in the top bar. The live column and the live page keep working. See Top Bar
tickerThe live quotes in the top bar. The markets tape on the front page keeps working. See Markets
clockThe clock in the top bar
auto-refreshThe automatic update of the wire on the front page and of the live page every 60 seconds. See Live Updates
listenThe Listen button on posts, which reads the post aloud. See Post Features
tocThe table of contents in the bottom bar on posts. Posts tagged #toc still get one. See Table of Contents
drop-capsThe enlarged first letter of the first paragraph on posts and pages. See Post Features
lightboxOpening images in a full-screen view when a reader clicks them
paginationThe Load More button under a list of posts. Readers get arrows to the newer and older page, with Page 2 of 5 between them, instead
cursorThe theme's own mouse cursor, and the labels it shows over badges such as Paid Post, Video Post and Audio Post
header-adThe AdSense unit in the partner slot of the live column. Off by default. See Ads
in-article-adThe AdSense slot between the post head and the post body. Off by default. See Ads
single-authorListed by default. While it is listed, cards name the author. Remove it on a one-person site to drop the names

single-author covers the cards that name the author: the featured post, the lead stories of Today and of each desk. The opinion columns keep the writer, because a column is introduced by who wrote it. The other cards of the front page, the archives and the menus never name the author.

Removing header-ad and in-article-ad is not enough on its own. Both slots also need your AdSense publisher ID and their own ad unit ID. See Ads.

Usage Examples#

Default#

Everything on except the two ad slots:

header-ad, in-article-ad, single-author

A calmer top bar#

No flash, no quotes and no clock. The top bar keeps the navigation and the buttons:

header-ad, in-article-ad, single-author, breaking, ticker, clock

A vertical site#

Every page stacks its sections, on every screen:

header-ad, in-article-ad, single-author, reading-columns

With advertising#

Both slots on. This also needs the AdSense settings:

single-author

Everything on#

Clear the field. Ads still need the AdSense settings before they appear.

Page Transition#

The Page transition setting picks the animation played when a reader moves from one page of your site to another. It sits in the same Theme tab.

OptionWhat the reader sees
NoneNo animation
FadeThe old page fades out and the new one fades in. The default
Slide UpThe new page fades in while rising a short way
ScaleThe new page fades in while shrinking slightly into place
Slide LeftThe new page fades in while moving a short way to the left
BlurThe new page fades in and comes into focus from a blur

The transition plays in browsers that support animated page changes. Other browsers load the next page without one. Readers who have turned on Reduce motion in their system never see it.

Notes#

  • Order does not matter, and spaces around the commas are optional.
  • Write the keywords exactly as they appear in the table. A misspelled keyword is ignored, so the feature stays on.
  • The theme looks for each keyword anywhere in the field, so do not add other words to it. A stray word that contains a keyword, such as ticker-old, turns that feature off.
  • Changes apply as soon as you save. Reload the site to see them.
