Reading Preferences
Every reader of Break can adjust how the site looks for them. The gear icon in the top bar opens the Settings panel from the side of the window. The theme remembers each choice for that reader.
There is nothing to set up in Ghost Admin. The panel ships with the theme and is on every page.
Where to Find It#
- Open your site
- Click the gear icon near the right end of the top bar, between the bookmarks and the Subscribe button
- The Settings panel opens
The , and ? keys open and close the same panel.
Available Settings#

The chosen option in each row is marked with a small triangle in your accent color.
Some rows depend on your settings and on the page:
- Appearance is missing when
toggle-dark-modeis in Disabled features. - Reading mode is missing when
reading-columnsis in Disabled features. On a post or an ordinary page it shows Scroll and cannot be changed, because those are always read top to bottom. - Content width is hidden on phones, where the column is already as narrow as the screen.
Keyboard Shortcuts#
The foot of the panel lists the keyboard shortcuts. They are single keys, without Ctrl, Cmd or Alt.

- The keys do nothing while the reader is typing in a field, such as the search box or a sign-up form.
- While a panel or a dropdown is open, the keys are left to it. Only
,and?work, to close the settings panel again. BandLwork on posts only.Rworks only on pages that follow the reading mode.- On touch screens the list is hidden, since there is no keyboard to use it with.
How It Is Remembered#
- Choices are stored in the reader's own browser and applied on every page and every later visit.
- Nothing is sent to your server, and nothing is tied to a member account.
- The settings are kept per browser and per device. The same person gets the defaults again on another phone or computer.
- Clearing browser data resets the reader to the defaults.
Notes#
- The panel is available to everyone: visitors, free members and paid members.
- A reader's choice never changes what other people see, and it does not change your theme settings.
- Content width and Line spacing only affect the body of posts and pages. Font size applies across the site.
