Newsletters
Emails and news stories read differently, so Break keeps them apart. A post tagged #newsletter leaves the main feed of the site and is collected at /newsletters/ instead, where past issues are listed by date with their own RSS feed.
Setup Instructions#
- Write the post as usual
- Open Post settings → Tags and add the internal tag
#newsletter - Publish the post, choosing Publish and email or Email only if Ghost should send it to your subscribers
- The post appears at
/newsletters/and leaves the front page feed and/blog/
The tag only decides where the post is listed. Sending the email is a separate Ghost step, and you can add the tag before or after the send.
The /newsletters/ page comes from the routes.yaml file that ships with the theme. If you have not uploaded it yet, follow the Getting Started guide, otherwise the page returns a 404 and the posts stay in the main feed.
What the Page Looks Like#
The page opens with a Newsletters heading, the line Every past issue in one place. and an RSS feed button. Below it, the issues are listed newest first, one row each:
| Part | Source |
|---|---|
| Date | The day of publication in large type, the month and year under it |
| Title | The post title, linked to the post |
| Summary | The Excerpt field, or the first 30 words of the post |
The rows have no image, because an emailed issue rarely carries a feature image. Write a short custom excerpt in Post settings → Excerpt if you want the row to read well.
Twelve issues are listed per page. The rest load behind a Load More button. With pagination in Disabled features, the page shows newer and older links instead. See Features.
RSS Feed#
The page has its own feed at:
https://yoursite.com/newsletters/rss/
Readers who only want the email issues can follow that feed instead of the main one. The RSS feed button on the page links to it.
Where Newsletters Show Up#
A #newsletter post is left out of:
- the wire on the front page and the older pages of the front page (
/page/2/and on) - the
/blog/page - the main RSS feed at
/rss/
It still shows up on its tag and author archives, in the search, on the Archive page and in You might also like at the bottom of other posts. Front page sections that pick the latest posts on their own, such as Today, can also show it.
The subscribe block in the menu#
The navigation menu can hold a subscribe block, added as a row whose label starts with @ and whose URL is /subscribe/ or /membership/. Its picture is the feature image of your newest #newsletter post. When that post has no feature image, or there is no newsletter post yet, the block uses the site's cover image from ⛭ Settings → Design & branding. See Navigation.
Notes#
- The tag moves the post, not the email. A post sent by email without the tag stays in the main feed, and a tagged post that was never emailed still lands on
/newsletters/. - Featured posts fill the top of the front page, so avoid marking a newsletter as Featured unless you want it there.
- Ghost's own newsletters, the email lists readers subscribe to, are a different thing. The subscribe block in the menu lists them by name under What you get, and they are not connected to the
#newslettertag.
