Filters

Several Break settings take the same short filter string. It answers two questions at once: which tags or authors to show, and in what order.

Where Filters Are Used#

SettingGroupControlsDefault
Page tags filterSite-wideThe tags listed on the Tags pagepopular:12
Page authors filterSite-wideThe authors listed on the Authors pagepopular:12
Section tags filterHomepageThe tag cards of the What do we cover? sectionpopular:3

All of them live in ⛭ Settings → Design → Customize → Theme.

Syntax#

ValueResult
popularMost posts first. This counts published posts, not page views
a-zAlphabetical by name
z-aReverse alphabetical
recentNewest first, by the date the tag or author was created
popular:6Any of the four above with a limit, here the six with the most posts
business, techExactly these tags or authors, by slug
(empty)Shows nothing, so the section or row is hidden

Write the limit right after the colon with no spaces around it, as in popular:6. A keyword without a limit lists up to 100 items. Keep the limit at 100 or below.

Examples#

Give the front page six desks, the busiest tags first:

popular:6

Pick the desks yourself:

world,business,tech,markets

List every author alphabetically on the Authors page:

a-z

Notes#

  • Use slugs, not names. Write world-news, not World News, and separate slugs with commas and no spaces.
  • Tag filters always leave out issues, the tags whose slug starts with issue-. Listing an issue's slug does not bring it back. See Issues.
  • A tag or author with no published posts is skipped on the Tags page, the Authors page and in the desks, so they can show fewer items than the limit.
  • The What do we cover? section shows at most three tags, whatever the limit.
  • The desks take turns between three looks in the order the filter returns them. See Desks.
  • The tags of the markets tape, the ones whose slug starts with market-, are ordinary tags to a filter. Leave them out by listing the slugs you want.
