Post Features
A post in Break carries more than the article itself. This page covers what the theme adds around your writing, what switches each piece on or off, and what a reader can do with it.
Posts are always read top to bottom, even when the rest of the site reads sideways. See Reading Mode.
What a Post Page Contains#
In order, top to bottom:
- The head. The feature image, up to three tags, the title, the excerpt you wrote in Post settings, the authors with their bios, and a line with the reading time, the dateline and the buttons
- An in-article ad, if you have set one up. See Ads
- The body of the post
- Continue. The post's tags and links to the older and the newer post
- Discussion. Ghost's comments, when they are turned on
- You might also like. Other recent posts
- More from, once for each edition tag on the post
- The recommendations, the subscribe section and the footer, as on every page
The bottom bar names each part as the reader reaches it. See Table of Contents for the headings of the post in the same bar.
The Dateline#
The head shows the date and time the post was published, for example Oct 1, 2026, 09:30. When you edit the post on a later day, a second stamp follows it, for example Updated Oct 2, 14:05. An edit on the day of publishing adds nothing.
Times are shown in the site's timezone, set in ⛭ Settings → General. Cards elsewhere on the site always show the publish date.
The Buttons#
Three buttons sit at the end of the head's bottom line.
Listen#
The Listen button reads the post aloud with the voice built into the reader's browser. It reads the title, then the paragraphs, headings, list items, quotes and image captions of the body in order. The passage being read is highlighted and kept in view.
- Click once to start, again to pause, and again to continue.
- The
lkey does the same as the button. - While the post is read, a player card opens under the button. It shows whether reading is on or paused, the place in the post such as
02 / 08, the passage being read, a progress bar and the time left. A click on the bar jumps to that point. Two buttons step to the previous or next passage, and the close button stops reading. - Reading stops when the reader leaves the page.
- The voice follows the site language set in ⛭ Settings → General, when the browser has a voice for it.
- The button stays hidden in browsers that cannot read aloud.
Nothing is sent to your server or to an outside service. To remove the button, add listen to Disabled features. See Features.
Share#
The share button opens Ghost's own share window for the post.
Bookmark#
The bookmark button saves the post for later. The b key does the same. Saved posts are counted on the bookmark icon in the top bar, listed in the panel behind it, gathered on the /bookmarks/ page and shown in the Reading list section of the front page.
Bookmarks are kept in the reader's own browser. Nobody has to sign in, and nothing is sent to your server. See Bookmarks.
Sharing a Quote#
When a reader selects a sentence in the body, a small bar appears above the selection with two buttons:
| Button | What it does |
|---|---|
| Copy quote | Copies the quote in quotation marks, followed by the post title and its address |
| Post | Opens a new post on X with the quote, the post title and its address |
The bar appears for selections between 12 and 480 characters, inside the body only. It goes away when the reader scrolls or clears the selection. There is no setting for it.
Resume Reading#
Break remembers how far a reader got in a post. When they open the same post again, a Resume reading button with the percentage, for example Resume reading 46%, appears above the bottom bar. A click takes them back to that point. The button leaves after about twelve seconds if it is not used.
- It only appears when the reader had read more than a few lines and had not reached the end.
- The position is kept in the reader's own browser, for their 40 most recently opened posts.
- There is no setting for it.
You Might Also Like#
After the comments, a grid of up to six other posts, newest first. These are your latest posts, not posts that share a tag with the one being read. The post being read is left out.
There is nothing to configure.
More From an Issue#
When a post has a tag whose slug starts with issue-, a section headed More from and the tag's name follows the related posts. It shows up to eight other posts with that tag and a View issue link to the tag's page. A post with two edition tags gets two of these sections. See Issues.
Drop Caps#
An enlarged first letter on the first paragraph of the body. It is on for every post and page out of the box.
- To switch it off site-wide, add
drop-capsto Disabled features. - To keep it on one post after that, add the internal tag
#drop-capto the post.
The drop cap goes on the first paragraph, even when an image or a heading comes before it.
Lightbox#
A click on the feature image or on an image in the body opens it full screen. To turn this off, add lightbox to Disabled features.
Comments#
Break uses Ghost's own comments, in a section headed Discussion after the older and newer post links.
- Go to ⛭ Settings → Membership
- Find the Commenting section
- Choose All members or Paid members only
- Click Save
Set commenting to Nobody and the section disappears from every post. Moderation, notifications and member permissions are handled by Ghost. See Comments.
Notes#
- Pages share the head, the body, drop caps and the lightbox with posts. They have no buttons, no Continue section, no comments and no related posts.
- A members-only or paid post shows the opening of the body to visitors without access, followed by a call to sign up or upgrade.
