Section Headings

Every front page section has a heading. On a desktop, where the page scrolls sideways, the heading runs down the left edge of its section as a vertical strip, with the section number and the section's link. When the sections stack, the heading is a line above the section. The same name appears in the bottom bar while the reader is in that section.

Headings come from two places:

  • Your content. Some sections take their heading from a tag or a page. You rename these in Ghost Admin.
  • The theme's translation file. The other headings are fixed text. You rename these by editing a file in the theme.

Headings You Rename in Ghost Admin#

Two more sections use your content for their large title, while the heading itself stays fixed:

  • Editor's picks shows the name of the tag with the slug picks as its large title.
  • By the numbers shows the title of the page with the slug numbers as the card's headline.

Rename the tag or the page and the front page follows. No theme file is involved.

Headings in the Translation File#

These headings and link labels are written in the theme's translation file:

{desk} stands for the tag's name, so All {desk} reads All Opinion for a tag named Opinion. Keep {desk} in place when you edit it.

The featured section and the Subscribe section have no visible heading. Their names, Featured and Subscribe, appear only in the bottom bar, and they are in the same file.

Which File to Edit#

Break ships translation files for English, German, Spanish, French and Portuguese in the locales folder: en.json, de.json, es.json, fr.json and pt.json. Ghost uses the one that matches the publication language set in ⛭ Settings → General. For an English site, edit locales/en.json.

Each line pairs the original text, on the left, with the text shown on the site, on the right:

"The wire": "The wire",

Change only the text on the right:

"The wire": "Newswire",

Never change the text on the left. The theme looks the line up by it, and a changed left side brings back the original heading.

Step-by-Step#

  1. Download your theme from Ghost Admin, or open the theme folder on your computer
  2. Open the translation file for your site's language, for example locales/en.json
  3. Search for the heading as it appears on the site, for example "Most read"
  4. Change the text on the right of the colon
  5. Save the file
  6. Zip the theme folder again
  7. Upload the zip in ⛭ Settings → Design → Change theme
  8. Reload the front page and check the new heading

Notes#

  • Section numbers are added by the theme. Do not type them into a heading.
  • One line can be used in several places. RSS is the link label of both The wire and Listen, Live is also the status line of a featured #breaking post, and Today also marks the current day in the wire and the end of the archive timeline. Changing the line changes every place that uses it.
  • Updating the theme replaces the translation file. Keep a note of the headings you changed and make the edits again after each update. See Update Guide.
  • The headings of the desks, Opinion, Long reads and The week ahead never need a theme edit. Rename the tag or the page instead.
