Featured
The front page opens with one post shown large: its picture, a status line with its tags, the title, the excerpt, the author and a link to the story. The Homepage cover setting picks one of four looks for it.

Available Looks#
| Look | Layout |
|---|---|
Split | The picture beside the text |
Cover | The picture behind the text |
Headline | No picture. The title, excerpt and author alone |
Grid (default) | The post on a dark card with its picture across the top, and the six latest other posts beside it as a numbered list |
In the Grid look, each item in the list shows one tag, the title, two lines of excerpt, the reading time and the date. The featured post itself is never repeated in the list.
Which Post Is Featured#
Break shows the most recently published post that is marked as featured in Ghost. If no post is featured, it shows the most recently published post instead, so the section is never empty once you have published anything.
To feature a post:
- Open the post in the editor
- Open Post settings
- Turn on Featured
- Click Publish or Update
The order follows the publish date, not the moment you turned Featured on. Featuring an older post does not move it into this section while a newer featured post exists.
Featured posts are also used further down the page. The second newest one fills
the Weekend feature when no post is tagged
#spotlight, and the featured posts fill Most read
when no post is tagged #most-read.
The LIVE Mark#
The status line above the title says Featured. When the post is also tagged #breaking, it says Live instead, so readers can see that the story is still developing. Remove the #breaking tag when the story is over and the line goes back to Featured. See Live Updates for the rest of what the tag does.
Notes#
- The excerpt is the Excerpt field in Post settings. When that field is empty, Ghost uses the beginning of the post.
- A post without a feature image shows a lettered placeholder in the
Split,CoverandGridlooks.Headlineshows no picture in any case. - The Live updates column stands beside this section on a desktop and follows it on a phone.
