Internal Tags

Most sections of Break are filled by tagging content or by giving a page a certain slug. This page lists all of them in one place.

Ghost treats any tag that starts with # as internal. It changes how the theme behaves, but readers never see it and it gets no tag page of its own.

How to Add a Tag#

  1. Open the post or page
  2. Click Post settings (the gear icon) or Page settings
  3. In the Tags field type the tag including the #, for example #breaking
  4. Press Enter, then click Publish or Update

A post can carry any number of internal tags next to its public tags.

Internal Tags#

TagWhat it does
#breakingPuts the post in the live column of the front page and on the /live/ page, and in the top bar flash for 24 hours. See Live Updates
#spotlightThe newest one becomes the weekend feature on the front page. Without one, the second featured post is used. See Curated Sections
#most-readUp to six posts fill the Most read list. Without any, your featured posts are used. See Curated Sections
#videoAdds the post to the Watch section and the /video/ page, puts a Video badge on its cards and moves a video that opens the post into the post head. See Video Post
#audioAdds the post to the Listen section and the /podcast/ page, puts an Audio badge on its cards and turns on the sticky player. See Audio Post
#photoThe newest one becomes The picture, a full-width cover on the front page. See Watch, Listen, Picture
#video-previewThe post's large cards play its first video, muted, instead of the picture. See Video Preview
#tocGives this post or page a table of contents, even when the toc feature is off. See Table of Contents
#drop-capGives this post a drop cap, even when the drop-caps feature is off. See Post Features
#newsletterMoves the post out of the front page and /blog/ into /newsletters/. The newest one's picture appears in the subscribe mega menu. See Newsletters
#projectAdds the post to /projects/ and to the projects mega menu. See Projects

#newsletter and #project depend on the routes.yaml file that ships with the theme. See Getting Started.

Public Tags With a Special Meaning#

These are ordinary public tags. Readers see them, and they have tag pages. What matters is the slug, set in ⛭ Settings → Tags.

SlugWhat it does
issue-*A slug that starts with issue-, such as issue-12, makes the tag an edition. It gets a grid on /issues/ and a More from row at the end of each of its posts, and it is left out of every tag list. See Issues
market-*A slug such as market-btc or market-eur-usd adds a market card to the markets tape. See Markets
marketsThe desk the markets tape links to, and the archive the /markets/ page lists. See Markets
opinionIts three newest posts become the opinion columns on the front page, under the tag's name. See Opinion
picksIts three newest posts become the editor's picks, under the tag's name. See Curated Sections
longreadsIts three newest posts become the long reads, under the tag's name. See Curated Sections

The tags named in the Desks filter setting each get a section of the front page as well. See Desks.

Pages Recognised by Slug#

Some pages are picked up by their address rather than by a tag. Create the page, set Page settings → Page URL to the slug, and publish it.
