Video Post
A video post leads with the video instead of a picture. Tag a post #video and Break moves the video that opens the post into the post head, lists the post in the Watch section and on the video page, and keeps the video playing in a small player while the reader scrolls on.
Setup Instructions#
- Open the post you want to turn into a video post
- Make the video the first block of the post body, before any text. Use a Video card with an uploaded file, or an embed such as YouTube or Vimeo
- Open Post settings → Tags and add the internal tag
#video - Click Publish or Update
Use an internal tag that starts with # so it stays hidden from your public
site.
The video has to be the first block. If a paragraph, an image or a heading comes before it, the video stays where it is in the body and the head shows the feature image. The sticky player still works for that video.
What the Reader Sees#
| Element | Behavior |
|---|---|
| Post head | The video fills the box beside the title, where the feature image usually sits |
| Feature image | Shown in the box while the video loads |
| Sticky player | Appears once the video plays and scrolls out of view |
| Card badge | A Video badge on the picture of the post's cards |
The Sticky Player#
The sticky player appears once the reader has started the video and the post head has scrolled out of view. The video itself moves into the player and keeps playing. When the reader scrolls back up, it returns to its place in the head.
The player shows the post title and a close button. A click on the title scrolls back to the head. Closing the player, or pressing Escape, pauses the video and puts it back in the head.
For YouTube and Vimeo embeds the browser does not report when the reader presses play. Break treats the first click on the video as the start of playback.
Where Video Posts Are Listed#
- The Watch section of the front page shows your four newest posts tagged
#video: the newest one large and three smaller cards under it. Its head links to the video page. See Watch, Listen, Picture. - The video page, a page with the slug
video, shows up to 24 posts tagged#videoas a grid. See Live, Video and Podcast.
Notes#
- A
#videopost without a video in its body shows the feature image like any other post. Without a feature image either, the head has no box and the title takes the whole width. - To make the post's cards play the video, add
#video-previewas well. See Video Preview. - If a post carries both
#videoand#audio, the sticky player follows the audio card. See Audio Post. - Everything below the video is a normal post body, so a transcript, show notes and a table of contents all work as usual.
- Removing
#videoreturns the video to its place in the body.
